Most Case XX handles are bone, and the bone comes one of two ways: smooth, or jigged, which means it's cut with a pattern that adds texture and grip. Case's own named jigs include Peach Seed, Corn Cob, Crandall, Gator, Platts, Rogers, Sawcut, Barnboard and Standard. Pocket Worn® isn't a jig. It's a Case factory finish that makes a new knife look and feel like it's been carried for a good while. Beyond bone, you'll find genuine stag, 6.5 BoneStag® (bone made to look like stag), abalone, buffalo horn, wood, and synthetics such as Delrin, Kirinite®, Micarta® and G-10. Mica pearl is Corelon, a synthetic, not real pearl. The quickest way to tell what you're holding is the first digit of the pattern number on the tang: Case uses it as a handle code.

Smooth bone
Case's bone handles come from the shin bone of Zebu cattle raised in Brazil. The bone is cut into slabs. Some are left smooth and polished, and others go on to be jigged. Smooth bone shows off the bone's color without any texture cut into it. On the tang, bone is handle code 6.

Jigged bone: what jigging means
Jigging cuts a pattern into the surface of the bone, so the handle has texture you can feel and grip. Jigged bone is often dyed, which is where colors like Old Red, Amber and Caribbean Blue come from. Case has around twenty jig patterns, but only a handful show up on most knives. Each one has its own name, so the jig is part of the handle description on every listing.

Rogers, Rogers Corn Cob and Sawcut jigs
Rogers, Rogers Corn Cob and Sawcut are three more of Case's named jigs. Each has its own look, and the best way to learn them is side by side in the photos on each listing. Case also lists Barnboard, Second Cut and Standard among its jigs. Case says Second Cut is jigged to look like it was hand-cut twice. We don't have Barnboard or Second Cut bone in stock right now.

Is Bermuda a jig? No. Bermuda is a color. Case's Bermuda Green Bone, for example, has been offered in the Rogers jig. The color and the jig are two separate parts of a handle description.
Pocket Worn®: Case's factory finish
Pocket Worn® is a finish, not a material and not wear. Case hand-finishes these knives at the factory with rounded bolsters, turned edges and extra buffing on the handle, so a brand-new knife has the soft, broken-in feel of one that's been carried for years. On the knives we carry, it's on Corn Cob or Peach Seed jigged bone, so check the handle line on each listing for the jig.

Genuine stag and 6.5 BoneStag®
Genuine stag is deer antler, and it carries handle code 5, so the 5 in front of 52132 tells you it's stag. 6.5 BoneStag® is Case's answer for folks who want the stag look on a bone knife. It's genuine bone that's jigged and then flamed to look like stag, and it gets its own code, 6.5.
Stag and 6.5 BoneStag® knives in stock: - Case XX 05537 Genuine Deer Stag Baby Butterbean: Spear + pen, pattern 52132 SS, genuine deer stag, 2¾ inches closed. - Case XX 03573 6.5 BoneStag® Trapper: Clip + spey, pattern 6.5254 SS, 6.5 BoneStag®, 4⅛ inches. - Case XX 65305 – 6.5 BoneStag Mini Trapper: Clip + Wharncliffe, pattern 6.5207W SS, 6.5 BoneStag®, 3½ inches closed. - Case XX 65313 6.5 Bonestag Sowbelly: Clip + sheepfoot + spey, pattern TB6.5339 SS, 6.5 BoneStag®, 3⅞ inches closed.

Abalone
Abalone is a natural, iridescent shell. It shares handle code 8 with genuine mother-of-pearl, so the 8 in front of 8254 means a natural shell handle.

Mica pearl (Corelon) and Kirinite®
Mica pearl is not real pearl. Case's mica pearl handles are Corelon, a synthetic resin made to look like mother-of-pearl, and it carries handle code 9 where real pearl would be 8. Kirinite® is another of Case's synthetics, with handle code 10. Several of our Kirinite knives come in pearl-look colors, so check the handle line if you're shopping for real shell.
Mica pearl and Kirinite® knives in stock: - Case XX 6073PS Pink Salmon Mica Pearl Trapper: Clip + spey, pattern 9254 SS, Pink Salmon Corelon (mica pearl), 4⅛ inches closed. - Case XX 23431 Blue Pearl Kirinite Trapper: Clip + spey, pattern 10254 SS, smooth Blue Pearl Kirinite®, 4⅛ inches closed. - Case XX 23448 Medium Stockman Blue Pearl Kirinite: Clip + sheepfoot + spey, pattern 10318 SS, smooth Blue Pearl Kirinite®, 3⅝ inches closed.

Smooth and jigged synthetics
Case's everyday synthetic handles are molded, often from Delrin. The handle code tells you the color and finish: 2 is smooth black, 3 is smooth yellow, 4 is smooth synthetic in other colors, and 6 covers jigged synthetic as well as bone. That's why a jigged synthetic knife like the Rough Black Sod Buster Jr reads 6137.
Synthetic-handle knives in stock: - Case XX 14335 Ford F-150 Trapper Smooth Black Delrin: Clip + spey, pattern 2254 SS, smooth black Delrin with Ford branding, 4⅛ inches closed. - Case XX 80505 – Orange Synthetic Smooth Mini Trapper: Clip + spey, pattern 4207 SS, smooth orange synthetic, 3½ inches closed. - Case XX 18229 Rough Black Sod Buster Jr: Skinner blade, pattern 6137 SS, jigged black synthetic, 3⅝ inches closed. - Case XX 60182 SparXX Trapper Jigged White Synthetic: Clip + spey, pattern 6254 SS, Standard jigged white synthetic (Delrin), 4⅛ inches closed.

Questions about Case jigs and handle materials
What does "jigged" mean on a Case knife? Jigging cuts a texture pattern into the handle, usually bone, for looks and a surer grip. Case names each pattern, such as Peach Seed, Corn Cob, Crandall or Gator, and the jig name shows up in the handle line of the listing. Smooth bone is the same bone without the jig.
Is mica pearl real mother-of-pearl? No. Case's mica pearl is Corelon, a synthetic resin made to look like pearl. You can confirm it on the tang: Corelon carries handle code 9, and genuine mother-of-pearl and abalone carry code 8.
What does Pocket Worn® mean? It's a factory finish from Case, not wear from use. The bolsters are rounded, the edges turned and the handle buffed by hand, so a new knife feels like it's been in your pocket for years. Unless the listing says otherwise, our Pocket Worn knives ship new in the box.
What's the difference between stag and 6.5 BoneStag®? Genuine stag is deer antler and carries handle code 5. 6.5 BoneStag® is genuine bone that Case jigs and flames to give it the look of stag, and its code is 6.5.
How can I tell a Case knife's handle material from the pattern number? Look at the first digit or letters. 1 and 7 are wood, 2 through 4 are smooth synthetics, 5 is stag, 6 is bone or jigged synthetic, 6.5 is BoneStag, 8 is pearl or abalone, 9 is Corelon, 10 is Micarta, G-10 or Kirinite, and BH is buffalo horn. The next digit tells you the number of blades.
Is Bermuda a jig pattern? No. Bermuda is a color, Bermuda Green Bone. The jig is a separate part of the description, so you might see Bermuda Green Bone in a Rogers jig.
