Caring for and understanding your Case knife
What does the tang stamp on a Case knife tell you?
The tang stamp is the mark Case puts near the base of the blade, and it tells you when the knife was made. For many years Case has dated its knives with a dot system: a new stamp starts with a full row of dots, and one dot comes off each year after that, so counting the dots points to the year. The pattern number is stamped on the tang too, so between the two you can tell what the knife is and when it was made. Our guide How to Read Case XX Knife Pattern Numbers and Tang Stamps covers the details.
What's the difference between CV and stainless steel on a Case knife?
CV is Case's high-carbon chrome vanadium steel. It isn't rust-resistant, so it needs a thin coat of oil, and over time it darkens into a patina that doesn't hurt the blade. Case's Tru-Sharp™ stainless (SS on the tang) resists rust and needs very little care. Each listing's pattern line shows CV, CS or SS so you know which one you're getting.
What does Pocket Worn® mean?
Pocket Worn® is a finish W.R. Case & Sons applies at the factory. It isn't wear from use. The bolsters are rounded, the edges turned and the handle buffed by hand, so a new knife has the broken-in feel of one that's been carried a long time. Unless the listing says otherwise, knives ship new in the box.
How do I care for and oil my Case knife?
After use, clean the whole knife, inside and out: wipe the blade with a damp cloth, dry it well, and use a cotton swab to get dirt out of the handle. Before you put it away, put a light coat of oil on the blade and the pivot points. CV and carbon steel blades need a little extra care, so keep a thin film of oil or wax on them. Case also asks that you use your knife only for cutting, never as a pry bar, screwdriver or chisel.
What do the numbers in a Case pattern number mean?
Case's pattern numbers follow a simple code. The first digit gives the handle material, for example 6 for jigged bone, 5 for genuine stag and 8 for mother-of-pearl. The second gives the number of blades, and the rest is the factory pattern. So a 6254 is a bone-handled, two-blade Trapper (pattern 54).
Do Case knives come with a warranty?
Yes. W.R. Case & Sons warrants every Case knife against defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the owner, and Case will repair or replace a defective knife at its option. Case's warranty doesn't cover normal wear or misuse, but Case's repair department can fix misuse damage for a reasonable fee. Warranty and repair requests go to Case through the Case warranty page.
